My Story and Review, of Getting a Pet at the Oregon Humane Society

I will talk about how we got our new dog (Missy). I will share my experience with you.

  

Picking a pet:

We got Missy at the Oregon Humane Society (OHS). We knew we wanted a small lap dog, just like my previous dog (Sadie).

You can just go and look at all the different animals at the shelter if you want. Internet is so handy for everything now-a-days. Almost everyone has a website four there business. So we looked online at OHS. We saw all the animals. It is easier and faster, I think to look at home first, and narrow it down to one or two animals you want to go see. Then go see them.

My story:

    Sadie was a small black dog. She loved to be held. she was almost always cold, she would get up by the wood fireplace even in her old age.

   She was  a spoiled little baby of a dog. Everyone was extremely sad when she died she was part of the family (at some point every pet is not just a pet anymore but family.) She lived a long life though 15 years, and she got to die a natural death, of old age.


   When Sadie was about 10 we got another dog, named Reuben. Sadie rejected him at first but after a while they became best of friends.

   Then we got A new dog Missy, After Sadie died. We were Vary worried about how Reuben would react to the new dog. He had waited in the car with my mom and brother, while My dad and me where in the shelter. We had got Reuben from a shelter setting too and did not want to subject him to that.
   My brother was holding him and when we started to come out with Missy, my mom took Reuben in the front seat with her. Which was good, because there was a totally opposite reaction than we expected. He was panting and pulling trying to get back to Missy. He welcomed Missy Full heartedly.

This is a snail. We found it in the hot sun, it was going to die. So we put it in a container. We put dirt in the bottom. We put a pot for shelter and shade, in it And we fed it carrots always wash them. We have also fed it celery too. They live 3-10 years depending on what kind they are. They like it wet so don't be afraid to put a decent amount of water in at a time.

Care

I caught this moth little did I know I was going to care for it till death. I noticed it was missing a leg, I don’t know if it was just injured or it I injured it. I sure hope I didn’t. So I looked up “how to care for an injured moth”. I got lots of answers but they all said “kill it” “you can’t save it”

“it’s going to die”. But me being an animal lover said “no!” So I cared for it each day. I put a rock, some water and a cotton ball soaked in sugar water in there. Every day I would replace the food and make sure it had enough water. It kept losing legs. Petty soon it only had one leg. But I kept caring for it.    

Escape Artiest

Now the ladybug has escaped again! I am panicking, thoughts race though my head. Did it get out safe? Is it still in the house? Will I be able to find it? I Looked and looked and I could not find it. It was time for me to do school (I am home-schooled.) I gave up and said I’m not going to find it.

 A hour or two later I was up in my room thinking if I had only put that lid on tighter…and I heard a quiet banging noise in my window.  It was the ladybug! It was banging itself against the window. I had found Turbo! (If you don’t remember or haven’t been following the whole series, Turbo is the name my brother gave the ladybug)

Since it was a warm day, I decided that I should let the ladybug go. Since it obviously wanted out! My mom and I went outside to let it free. It flew off into the world, and was free again!

Ladybug Update

The lady bug is doing good. It seems to be happy. I feed it every day and give it about three drops of water. It does not move around much. But that’s good, so it does not fly away when I open it’s habitat.

Silly Ladybug

One day I got up, got ready for my day. After I was all ready for my day and had fed our two dogs and cat, I got the ladybug out to feed. To my surprise the ladybug was gone. I was panicking for the ladybug, she/he was out in the house with no food it could probably find water but it had absolutely no food! I was looking all over. I could not find it. I just hoped it had gotten out the way it came in. then I found it! It was gone for about a half a day. I put it back in the habitat. It seemed happy to be in the habitat again.

Setting up the Habitat

I rescued a ladybug, that had come in our home. I caught the ladybug in my bug catcher, but it was way to cold to release the ladybug.

I made a habitat for it. If you find a ladybug, and want to make one here is the website I found the instructions at http://www.wikihow.com/Take-Care-of-Your-Own-Ladybug . I found a container and put all the suggested things that were on the website, in it. You will need to feed it every day, or when the food runs out. You will also need to change out anything that is wilted, like leaves or lettuce (which is one of the suggested foods.) Once a week you will probably have to take everything out and wash the container, because well…..the poop will build up (yes I said it POOP!)  for all of you that didn’t know small creatures pooped (because there was a time in my life that I thought that) they do poop. When you wash the container out have a small jar or something to put the ladybug in. Always put a piece of fabric on the top of the container with a rubber band around it (because there are tiny holes in the fabric that the human eye can not see, but it lets enough air in so the bug can breath, but it can’t get out)

The ladybug is doing very good. I think he/she likes its new habitat. My brother has already named it ….Turbo.

I rescued a ladybug, which was in our bathroom. I caught it in a bug catcher, but it was way to cold for it to go outside. So I am going to keep it in a container until it is warm enough for it to go outside. I will update on how it is doing every other week or so. As soon as I start my updates, the links to them will be on this page.
