How to Care for an elderly Dog, what they need and what to expect

I have a small black dog named Sadie; she is 14 that is really old for a dog! She sleeps in my bed every night. She is a great dog. Now that she is old she does not move around much. She basically eats, poops, and sleeps.

I will advise you on how to care for an old dog, what they may need and what to expect in old age. I will also tell you what I do to care for my old dog.

You have to be extra gentle with an elderly dog.
If you have stairs at your house you will probably have to act as an elevator. And the dog might take advantage of that, to have some fun. One day the dog went up the stairs, I heard a bark she was at the top of the stairs wanting down. So I brought her down. This must have happened 8,9,10 times.
The dog might need medicine Sadie dog doesn’t but some dogs do.
The dog might lose some or all of its hair. My dog has almost no hair.
Your dog might have some potty problems. Sadie wears a diaper now.
They sleep a lot. And are very often cold. They need coats and blankets a lot, even in the summer. They might lose weight doe to the normal aging process.

I feed Sadie twice a day, morning and night. I change her diaper when she wets it. She has a soft bed that she lays on. I carry her a lot. I give her baths occasionally (to many baths will dry out you dogs skin, young or old.) She sleeps in my bed at bed time.

But no matter what your dog looks or aces like, I’m sure you will still love your dog friend. I know I do.
